Past Recipients

Megan Starling
2020 Recipient

My name is Megan Starling. I graduated as Salutatorian and Class President from Pike Liberal Arts School in 2020. I also had the joy and privilege of being Kelsey Starling’s little sister. Kelsey’s accident occurred the summer before my senior year, making that time of transitioning into college all the more difficult. However, because of the love and support of our community, family, and friends, a scholarship was started in Kelsey’s name. I had the honor of being its first recipient. The money was used to help fund my education at Auburn University as a Wildlife Science: Pre-Veterinary major, with minors in Theatre and Honors Business. More than what I was able to purchase, though, this scholarship gave me hope. Hope that my sister’s memory will live on in the young women that are chosen to represent her name each year. Her memory will live on in the hearts of everyone impacted by this scholarship and by the Kelsey Starling Memorial Foundation. I do not have the words to express my gratitude for those who took part in turning this small town  scholarship into something so much bigger. All I can say is thank you.

Addi Garrott
2021 Recipient

My name is Addi Garrott, and I am attending Auburn University. I am currently majoring in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences with a minor in Spanish. I am a member of the Gamma Delta chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta at Auburn, the SLLAC Lab, the University Program Council's campus Traditions Committee, the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association, the Spanish Club, and a Peer Advisor in the College of Liberal Arts. My favorite Auburn memory this far is having the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain, this past summer in pursuit of credits for my Spanish minor. For my future career goals, I hope to become a pediatric travel speech pathologist after obtaining my Master's degree in this field. All of my studies, dreams, and goals would not be possible without this foundation's contribution to my collegiate education. I am forever grateful for the Starling family and the Kelsey Starling Memorial Foundation for their support and generosity. I can only hope to be a light in this world like Kelsey was and strive to make her proud in all that I do!

Grace Rushing
2021 Recipient

I am deeply honored to have been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Kelsey Starling Memorial Scholarship. This award not only helped make my college education financially possible, but it also connected me to the legacy of a remarkable educator from my high school community.

After graduating from Pike Liberal Arts School, I attended Troy University, where I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Elementary Education. Investing in me through this special scholarship was truly an investment in tomorrow’s youth, as it enabled me to fulfill my dream—like Kelsey’s—of becoming a teacher. Throughout high school, I maintained a 4.0 GPA while playing sports, mentoring, volunteering, serving in my church, and participating in clubs and organizations dedicated to improving our schools, community, and country. I had the privilege of serving as president of the largest Senior High EXCEL Club in the state of Alabama.

In college, I continued my commitment to service within my community and church. I believe we exist to serve others by showing God’s love in practical ways. Even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference, opening hearts and strengthening communities.

Shortly after I graduated high school, my father passed away following a long battle with cancer and COVID. His death placed me on the receiving end of the very service I had long believed in. Kind and selfless individuals surrounded my family with tangible love—bringing meals, groceries, and care packages; mowing our lawn; running errands; and simply sitting quietly with us in our grief. Grief is emotional, physical, and spiritual—it is messy and uncomfortable. Yet these individuals chose to step into our heartbreak without expectation. Their compassion profoundly shaped me. Because of their example, I have come to understand that bereavement is another sacred realm of service—one I will never hesitate to enter, no matter how difficult. I know firsthand the lasting impact it has on those who are hurting. I can only imagine the depth of gratitude the Starling family must feel for the outpouring of love shown in honor of Kelsey. Kelsey Starling’s dedication to her students and her passion for shaping young lives continue to inspire those, like me, who follow in her footsteps.

Receiving a scholarship in her name motivated me to pursue my education with purpose, gratitude, and a steadfast commitment to giving back. The financial support eased the burden of tuition and allowed me to focus more fully on my academic and personal growth. More importantly, it reminded me that I am part of a community that values service, compassion, and perseverance. Representing Kelsey’s legacy with pride and integrity is truly an honor. The Kelsey Starling Memorial Scholarship is a meaningful way to keep her beautiful memory alive, and receiving it has been an incredible blessing. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to carry forward her legacy through my classroom, my service, and my life.

Kaylee Copeland
2022 Recipient

uncheckedMy name is Kaylee Copeland, and I had the honor of receiving the 2022 Kelsey Starling Memorial Scholarship. I am now a 5th grade teacher, and I hope each of my students sees in me what others so clearly saw in Kelsey. When people speak of her, the words loyal, kind, and full of life are always mentioned. After receiving the scholarship, I made a promise to myself to always be a light in others’ lives, just as Kelsey was. Her legacy will forever live on, and I strive each day to honor her and the impact she made.

Reese McWhorter
2023 Recipient

My name is Reese McWhorter, and I am a graduate of Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy, Alabama. After college, I chose to attend The University of Alabama as I am pursuing a degree in marketing and hope to further my career in medical sales. I could not thank The Kelsey Starling Memorial Foundation enough for providing this scholarship. This is such a generous gesture, and I am so thankful to be chosen as the recipient. From the time I met Kelsey when I was in her mom's kindergarten class, I knew she had a sweet spirit like no other. When I was told this scholarship was being awarded to someone who embodies the values and characteristics of Kelsey, I have never felt more honored.

Jhiayla White
2023 Recipient

My name is Jhiayla White, and I am a 2023 graduate of Pike County High School. In December 2025, I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Troy University, graduating with honors with a major in History and a minor in Philosophy and Religion. I aspire to become a public interest attorney dedicated to advocating for underserved communities and addressing systemic injustice.

I am honored to be one of the 2023 recipients of the Kelsey Starling Memorial Scholarship. During my time at Troy University, I was actively involved in the History Club, Student Support Services, the Office of Civic Engagement, and Delight Ministries. I am also a published author as my research was featured in The Alexandrian, Troy University’s history journal. These experiences strengthened my leadership skills, deepened my commitment to service, and enriched my academic journey. My faith has been a guiding force throughout my academic and personal journey. As Proverbs 16:3 reminds us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” I strive to honor God in my work, leadership, and service to others.

I am deeply grateful for the support of the Kelsey Starling Memorial Foundation, which has played a meaningful role in my educational journey. This scholarship has empowered me to pursue my goals with purpose and confidence, and I am honored to carry forward the values it represents as I continue to walk in faith and pursue my calling.
